The Aberdeen Police Department is warning the community of a scam going around town.
Police have received several reports of somebody who claims to be an APD officer named “Detective Tim Morgan,” according to a news release.
The impersonator claims to be calling about a legal matter that requires immediate attention from the phone number (605) 301-5542.
“The scammer’s voicemail has been set up to say, ‘You have reached the Aberdeen Police Department, all deputies are busy, leave a message.’ As a reminder, APD officers will never ask for payment to prevent a warrant or jail time. APD officers do not handle the collection of fines,” according to the release.

Another sign of the scam is that the police department doesn’t have deputies like a county sheriff’s office does.
If a real officer calls, they will direct the person notified to call them back through the Brown County dispatch center at 605-626-7911. Anyone who has received a scam call should report it at that same number.
