Aberdeen updates city website, simplifies navigation

After “soft-launching” updates for more than a week, Aberdeen’s new city website is live.

The URL is about all that’s not been changed. It’s still aberdeen.sd.us.

Much work has been done to make accessibility to city services faster and easier since the last major update in 2010, said Amber Schwab, the city’s economic development director and public information officer.

For more than a year, the city had been planning a complete renovation of its website to improve navigation, make it more user friendly and update graphics, links and other features, she said.

For instance, recent photos of city employees are now on the website.

“We’re thrilled to provide a more modern and efficient online experience. Our goal is to make it easier for residents to find important information, stay updated on city projects and events, and engage with local government,” Schwab said.

After the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department summer program guide is mailed out, there is usually an influx of visitors, and they should find the new website easier to use, she said.

She and other city workers dove into the project starting in February 2024.

“I couldn’t have done it without everyone’s hard work and dedication,” Schwab said. “I’m really excited about this project. It’s been a really fun year, and I cannot commend all the additional help I’ve had; that was a very vital part in launching it as quickly as it did.”

While the revamped website is live, the city isn’t done making improvements. There will be regular small upgrades and updates, and there are plans to launch an app later this year.

“We’re keeping the community connected in the best way to deliver your information,” Schwab said.
