Brown County Commission approves purchase of landfill compactor

The Brown County Landfill will be getting a new compactor with a $883,450 price tag.

A state grant will pay for about $176,690 of that amount with the county covering the rest. The Bomag compactor will be purchased from TranSource Truck and Equipment.

The transaction was approved during the commission’s brief regular meeting on Tuesday, April 8 at the Brown County Courthouse Annex.

Mike Scott, landfill manager, also discussed the type of cover materials used at the landfill. Back in the 1990s when Scott first started, a spray-on material was used, he said.

“We’ve kind of gone away from that. Where we’re trying to use soil cover now. It does take a little more of our airspace away, but what I’ve found over the last 30 years I’ve been there, from fire to blowing litter, it’s a better way to go as far as daily cover,” he said.

Scott said the landfill has about 1.6 million yards of extra soil on site, some of which the highway department used over the winter for shoulder work.

In other action, commissioners approved matters of routine business and met in executive session to discuss personnel and legal issues.
