A stolen Brown County Fairgrounds bench has been returned with a note of apology that reads, “Bench Returned by the ‘Chap.’ My apologies. I was wildly drunk.”

The bench went missing around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, according to a Facebook post by Rachel Kippley, fair manager. She said the bench belongs to the Brown County Fair Foundation.

Kippley provided an update via Facebook on the returned bench around 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

An image captured at the time the bench disappeared appeared to show a person loading the bench in the back of a white, extended cab pickup that has a box cover that lifts from the back. The bench was in the Avera Kids Zone, according to Kippley’s Facebook post.

The fair foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 2022 to raise money for fairgrounds improvements and recognize those who have made significant contributions to the fair.
