By Four stretches of Brown County roads will likely soon have lower speed limits.
Highway Superintendent Dirk Rogers proposed the changes during the Brown County Commission meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20 in the courthouse annex. Commissioners could approve the requests during next week’s meeting.

The speed limit reductions would be for:
- A mile of County Road 13E/129th Street from U.S. Highway 281 east to Brown County Road 10 from 55 mph to 45 mph. That’s north of Aberdeen and east of what’s often called Richmond Road.
- Three miles along County Road 14WA from County Road 10 to County Road 19 from 55 mph to 45 mph. The western part of the stretch is near the DemKota Ranch Beef plant on the southwest side of town.
- The northern half-mile of County Road 19/390th Avenue from Aberdeen’s Eighth Avenue Northeast north to County Road 15/24th Avenue Northeast from 45 to 40 mph.
- In the same area, a half-mile of County Road 15/Aberdeen’s 24th Avenue Northeast from County Road 19 to the west from 55 to 45 mph. That road is also known as Fairgrounds Road.
Rogers told commissioners that the speed limit reduction along County Road 13E is straightforward. The stretch has a stop sign on both ends.

“It would be different if it was a through road, then we’d be having a different conversation,” Rogers said. “There’s not a lot going on down there, you’re talking about 1 mile of road, a straight shot with stop signs on both ends.”
Chairman Duane Sutton said the change makes sense given the number of housing developments in the area.
The 3 miles of County Road 14WA are gravel and extend from South Fifth Street/387th Avenue to County Road 19/390th Avenue. The eastern intersection is near the southwest corner of airport property.

“And, eventually, one of my goals, I would like to narrow it up a little bit and make it look more like a road than a gravel parking lot down there. And we’ve made few strides in that direction,” Rogers said.
The reduction on County Road 19 is to make the stretch safer, especially near Dependable Sanitation where trucks enter and exit the road throughout the day.
In other action, commissioners met in executive session to discuss legal and personnel matters. No action was taken after the closed session.
