One Aberdeen graduate will soon be studying at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Central High School senior Ryan Fiechtner will be attending the academy and plans to study nuclear engineering, according to an announcement from U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson’s office.

Fiechtner eventually hopes to lead a team that designs, maintains and safely operates a nuclear reactor aboard an aircraft carrier or submarine. It’s a career he’s wanted to pursue since middle school, per the release.

“As I was researching what was involved and the requirements (of the Naval Academy), I thought the opportunity to pursue my dream career and serve my country at the same time was the best thing I could do for myself and for America,” Fiechtner said in the release.
A musician who also plays the mellophone, French horn and trumpet, Fiechtner hopes to join the Navy Academy Bugle & Drum Corps.
He is a Rensselaer medal recipient for outstanding science and math grades and a member of the Central debate team.
Military service is mandatory following graduation from a service academy.
