Students from across South Dakota will again keep Aberdeen lively this weekend.
The 2023 South Dakota High School Clay Target League State Tournament runs from Friday, June 9 though Sunday, June 11 at the Aberdeen Gun Club.
It’s on the heels of last week’s high school state softball tournament and American Legion Boys State, which also attracted large groups of young people to town.
The clay target state tournament is expected to draw some 900 students from nearly 60 high schools, according to information from the USA Clay Target League.
Trap shooting will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Skeet shooting runs Thursday through Saturday.
The Aberdeen Gun Club is at 38574 139th St., which is south of town on the west side of U.S. Highway 12.
Aberdeen Central girls finish second at AA golf tournament
Aberdeen Central placed second at the Class AA girls high school golf tournament earlier this week at Hillsview Golf Club in Pierre.
The Golden Eagles finished seven strokes behind state champion Mitchell.

Individually, Central’s Olivia Braun placed third with a two-day total of 148. Huron’s Bryn Huber and Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink both finished at 145, with Huber earning medalist honors in a playoff.
Central’s Emma Rohrer tied for ninth with a 155, and Morgan Jones was 12th, carding a 157.
In Class A, Aberdeen Roncalli’s Claire Crawford placed sixth, with a two-day total of 171. She was atop the leaderboard after shooting a 81 on Monday, June 5 at Meadowbrook Golf Club in Rapid City.
The Cavaliers wound up eighth in the team race. Sioux Falls Christian claimed the team title. Rylan Horning of St. Thomas More in Rapid City was the individual champ, shooting a 156.
In Class B at Cattail Crossing Golf Club in Watertown, Chester nabbed the team title. Allison Kahler of Bison/Hettinger/Scranton was the medalist, carding a 155.

The Class B boys tournament was at Prairie Winds Golf Club in Watertown. Gregory won the team crown, while Ipswich placed sixth.
Eli Fogle of Gregory was the medalist, shooting a 151. Ipswich’s Jace Konsor tied for ninth at 162.

Kessler, Lamont, Ernst win Wolves on the Water tournament
Nate Kessler, Jeff Lamont and Chris Ernst won the Wolves of the Water Walleye Tournament on Saturday, June 3 at New Everts Resort and Walth Bay near Glenham.
They finished with 18.66 pounds of fish. The team of Tom Goehring, Bob Fahrni and Jeff Ell took second at 17.6 pounds, while Stephen Hettick, Chris Hettick and Josh Hettick finished third with 17.55 pounds.
The team of Jordan Nehls, Doug Sombke and Mike Nehls caught the largest fish, a walleye weighing in at 8.61 pounds. They finished in eighth.
Wolves on the Water is a fundraiser for the Northern State University Athletic Department.
