By Infrastructure on the South Dakota Developmental Center campus in Redfield is getting a major upgrade.
The second phase of a decentralization heating project will soon begin. It will improve the heating systems across campus.
The developmental center employs 250 people and supports around 80 individuals, according to Kristen Kilmer, a spokeswoman for the South Dakota Department of Human Services.
The center provides comprehensive specialized services to enhance the quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

The first phase of the project was completed in December 2022. The prime contractor was Allied Plumbing and Heating, Inc. The cost of phase one was $1.714 million.
Kilmer said that as a result of those improvements, heating system efficiency increased from 72% to 95%.
“During phase two, four more buildings on the campus will be fitted with decentralized heating and domestic hot water systems,” she said in an email.
Funding for the project is being provided through the Bureau of Administration’s statewide and maintenance and repair budget, Kilmer said.
The state is currently going through the contracting process for the second phase.
Krohmer Plumbing submitted a bid for $2.387 million, Allied Plumbing and Heating submitted a bid for $1.99 million and Redlinger Bros. Inc. submitted a bid for $2.043 million, according to the state Bureau of Administration website.
Those bids were opened on Sept. 26, but a bidder has yet to be selected.
