NOTICE OF DEWATERING
SFC Civil Constructors in conjunction with South Dakota School and Public Lands, will
soon begin work on the Richmond Lake Dam Rehabilita9on Project. This essen9al project will
address repairs to the dam and spillway to ensure long-term safety and compliance with state
regula9ons and federal requirements.
The project includes efforts to mitigate seepage and replace the primary spillway. These
improvements are anticipated to increase the dam’s lifespan by as many as 130 years, helping
ensure the lake remains viable for many generations to come. While these improvements are
vital, they will require extended above-normal water flow rates in Foot Creek during the initial
stages of construction.
Lowering the lake level is necessary to complete the spillway work. This will be
accomplished by operating several large pumps to move water over the dam. Pumping will
begin May 11 and will run 24/7 for approximately 3 to 5 weeks.
Although water flow rates will be above normal, downstream water levels will be
monitored to remain below flood stage. Prolonged increased flows should be expected but will
be monitored closely, 24/7, by the project team. This is a controlled release of water and does
not pose a threat to public safety. Water flow can be adjusted as downstream conditions allow.
Depending on future rainfall, additional shorter periods of pumping may be required to
maintain the necessary lake level.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we undertake this important
rehabilitation to protect the community and preserve Richmond Lake. If you have any questions
or concerns, please contact our office at 605-332-5968. Updates will be shared through local
media.
