Dates have been set for the Brown County Landfill’s annual spring cleanup.
It will run from Friday April 24 through Saturday, May 2. There will be a drop site on Saturday, April 25 at Jensen Rock & Sand, 601 Ninth Ave. S.W., on the south side of Aberdeen.
Brown County commissioners waived most landfill fees for those dates during their meeting on Tuesday, March 24 at the courthouse annex.
During the cleanup period, the landfill does not charge residents when they deliver trash, waste and junk to the landfill. That includes:
- Paint
- Trees
- Shingles
- Rubble
- Furniture
- Waste oil
- Electronics
- Appliances
- Scrap metal
- Propane tanks
- Grass and leaves
Fees will still be charged for large demolition projects like homes and tree belts and for business and commercial waste. Mobile homes are not accepted. There’s also a limit of four tires from cars or trucks.

Item allowed at Jensen Rock & Sand between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. April 25 only include:
- Batteries
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Electronics
- Scrap metal
- Rubble, but no shingles
- Tires, with a limit of four
Large loads, grass, trees, shingles, paint, waste oil, propane tanks and antifreeze must be taken to the landfill.
Mike Scott, landfill manager, said the cleanup period is a week shorter than usual. It covers a week and two weekends as opposed to two weeks and three weekends. One reason for that, he said, is that the landfill is short staffed. A shorter cleanup gives workers a chance to keep up, he said.
The landfill address is 13225 379th Ave. From the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and U.S. Highway 12 on the western edge of Aberdeen, that’s 5 miles west and about a mile and two-thirds north. All loads must be covered and secured, and gravel roads should not be used to get to the landfill.
Hours at the landfill are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
