Larry Heier

Lawrence “Larry” Heier, 75

Lawrence “Larry” Heier, 75, of Oakes, ND, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 30, 2025, in Hospice Care in Fargo, ND.

Born on June 24, 1950, to John and Julia (Harty) Heier, Larry grew up in the Aberdeen area and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School before attending Aberdeen Central High School. In 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged after his dedicated service.

On November 28th, 1970, Larry married Cora Whitfield. Together for 54 years, they built a loving home in Oakes, ND, where Larry pursued a lifelong career in farming and eventually took on work such as flooring installation, custom cabinetry and woodworking. He proudly served on the township board, contributing to the farming community with the same commitment he brought to everything he did.

A skilled woodworker and cabinet builder, Larry was also an avid gardener and handyman whose talents touched every corner of his family’s life. He found joy in fishing, hunting, and trapping, and was known for his passion for competitive shooting. Above all, Larry loved cooking for his family—especially during the holidays—and took great pride in canning the bounty of his garden and making sure everyone was always taken care of.

Larry will be forever loved and deeply missed by his devoted wife, Cora; his children, Ryan Heier, Randy (Tiffany) Heier, Robert (Roxanne) Heier, Russell (Rayli) Heier, Richard Heier, and Renita (Derek) Westerhausen; 14 grandchildren; and his siblings, Albert Heier, Eugene Heier, and Regina Reis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia; his brother, Leo; and his sisters, Katy Kappenman, Lorie Oakes, Anne Kolash and great grand-daughter Brooklyn Roehrich.

Larry’s life was a testament to hard work, family, and the simple joys of the land he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Oakes followed by a private family burial at Glover Cemetery near Glover.  Larry’s service will be live streamed on the Dahlstrom Funeral Home website www.dahlstromfuneralhome.com on his obituary page.  In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in memory of Larry.
