By Pickleball enthusiasts will have more courts to use at Manor Park later this year.
The Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Board approved a bid from CWF Masonry of Aberdeen for $174,097 in concrete work, which will create three new courts and a plaza area. There are already three courts at the park.
The action was taken during the park board meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center.

Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director Mark Hoven said the work will begin as soon as possible so the courts can get some use this summer. Once the concrete work is done, he said, it will need to sit for 30 days to cure before striping can be done.
The bid doesn’t include the purchase of nets, umbrellas and other amenities, Hoven said, but the total cost should be within the $240,000 budget. Of that amount, $120,000 was raised by pickleball players in an effort to get additional courts in town.
In other action, the board:
- Heard from Aquatics and Recreation Supervisor Dan Severson who said a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit for the Strode Center is being installed. It cost $74,150.
- Authorized the department to seek a state Land and Water Grant for the replacement of playground equipment at Anderson Park and a Rails to Trails grant for the installation of solar lights along recreational trails in the northeast part of town. Hoven said he will provide cost estimates to the board in March.
- Hoven said a new concession manager for the softball complex will be sought. He’s reached out to the Hub City Softball to see if there’s interest and will get back to the board with new contract details.
- Heard from Severson, who said two inflatables have been purchased for the Aberdeen Dome at a cost of $7,800. Once training is complete, they will eventually be made available for use at certain times.
