A new pole is needed for a large American flag that’s usually on display at Wylie Park.
The old pole has been taken down after it was damaged during a winter storm at Christmastime. A structural engineer advised the city to err on the side of caution and take the pole down, said Mark Hoven, Parks, Recreation and Forestry director. That has been done.
Hoven said the hope is to have a new pole up by summer.
The department will work with a structural engineer and the manufacturer for a long-term fix, Hoven said. The 140-foot flagpole was last replaced in 2019. A flagpole should last more than three years, he said.
There are even bigger flagpoles provided by the manufacturer, Hoven said, so there will likely be adjustments made so the new pole erected at the Circle of Flags doesn’t again crack after a few years. He said it’s unlikely the changes will involve a shorter pole or a smaller flag.
Wylie Park was closed after Christmas because of the damaged flagpole. Now, Hoven said, it should be safe for walkers to use the trails in the park.
Insurance will help cover the cost of a new pole, he said.
When the pole was last replaced in 2019, the estimated cost was around $44,000.
