Robert “Bob” Gyles Smith was born June 6, 1947, in Mitchell, SD, to Robert and Joyce (Gyles) Smith. In his youth, he was lovingly known as “Bobby.” He spent his childhood growing up with three sisters in Mitchell. It was in his senior year of high school that he met his future wife, June Rubert, at a dance. After graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1965, he was drafted to serve in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
Bob served two years and was honorably discharged. He returned to Mitchell and was reunited with his high school sweetheart, June, and they were married in 1967 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Two children were born to this union, James and Kim.
In 1991, the family made the move to Aberdeen, where they made their home. Bob worked in dry cleaning for 30 years until his retirement.
In his free time, Bob loved to fish and enjoyed the simple things in life, especially gardening and sitting out on the patio in the summer. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends and hanging out at Schwan’s Recreation.
Grateful for having shared Bob’s life are his wife, June; daughter, Kim (Chad) Commet; son, James (Lisa) Smith; sister, Kathy Morken; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Nancy and Connie.
