Aberdeen Roncalli had three golfers in the top 21 to place fourth at the Class A boys high school golf state tournament, which finished Tuesday, Oct. 7 at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion.

The Cavaliers finished with a two-day team score of 642. Dakota Valley won, shooting a 599, followed by Vermillion at 603 and St. Thomas More of Rapid City at 634.

“All the guys came in with a great attitude and never got too high or too low,” said Roncalli head coach Jon Murdy. “Day one was a day where putts didn’t drop for us as much. Day two was a little better.”

More’s Hayden Heig was the medalist with a six-under par 138. Finn Anderson led Roncalli, finishing tied for ninth with a 154.

“Finn managed the course pretty well considering there were a few pin placements on the greens that had some difficult reads,” Murdy said.

Harper Schnabel rebounded from an inconsistent first-round 87 on Monday, Oct. 6 to shoot a 72 Tuesday and card a 159, good for a tie for 19th.

“That was kind of ridiculous to have that big of a turnaround, but that’s the kind of golf he can play,” Murdy said. “Day one was an anomaly. Today, he was way more confident, and he should be because he can produce rounds like that.”

Lucas Daggett’s two-day score of 160 left him tied for 21st.

Jesse Hernandez tied for 39th with a 169, and Matthew Gerlach’s 187 left him tied for 69th to round out the scoring for the Cavaliers.

Roncalli ground out a team score of 327 Monday, and Murdy said the Cavaliers struggled on the front nine holes.

“They were a little down on themselves because they know they can play better, and, honestly, I expect them to turn things around and put together a better score,” Murdy said Monday evening.

That’s exactly what happened as the Cavaliers held on to fourth place throughout Tuesday.
