Aberdeen is testing for water infiltration between sanitary and sewer systems.
The smoke testing will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 7 and is expected to continue until 11 a.m. on Friday, April 11.
Testing will focus on:
- Sections of North Kline and North Dakota streets from First Avenue Northeast to Fifth Avenue Northeast.
- Along Fifth Avenue Northeast from Kline to Dakota.
- Along First Avenue Northeast from Kline to Dakota.
The city fills the sanitary sewer system with a non-toxic smoke. If smoke escapes, there’s an issue that needs to be addressed. Testing can reveal problems like a dry sewer trap or a hole in a sewer stack in nearby homes. The smoke, which has a distinct smell, can find its way inside the home in those instances.

The smoke leaves no residue and has no effect on plants or animals, per the release. Visibility and odor last only a few minutes if ventilation is adequate.
Smoke may enter homes if:
- Vents connected to the building’s sewer pipes are inadequate, defective or improperly installed.
- Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers and other drains are dry, defective, improperly installed or missing.
- Pipes, connections and seals of the wastewater drain system in and under buildings are damaged, defective, have plugs missing or are improperly installed.
Traces of smoke entering a home are an indication that gasses and odors from the sewer might also enter. They can be unpleasant, dangerous and pose a health risk.
