Huron’s Perry goes back to back at Brown County Speedway

Huron racer Nick Perry moved from the outside pole position to the inside line after two laps and took the checkered flag in the Midwest Modified feature Friday, May 15 at the Brown County Speedway.

It was his second-straight win on the dirt oval in Aberdeen. He caught inside pole leader Lorin Johnson around the third turn and grabbed the lead at the end of the first lap.

“I knew it was going to be hard to get around Johnson on turn one on lap one, so my only option was turn three, and I set her in there as hard as I could and it was either gonna stick or it wasn’t, and luckily it did. Once I got out to the lead, I kind of stopped paying attention to what was going behind me.”

Perry is in his third year of racing and said the improvement in his driving has led to this early success this season.

“We made a lot of changes to the car the past couple of years, but now the driver is finally catching up to the car,” he said. “I’ve always tried to stay proactive and not reactive when I’ve raced. I mean, I can tell you how to drive a race car, don’t expect me to show you how to drive one.”

Winner’s Broc Stout grabbed his first victory in the Street Stock feature Friday night. He started in the second row, but overtook Kyle Betram and Jodie Michaelsohn early and held off the field to triumph.

It was Stout’s first win at the Brown County Speedway in 10-plus years of racing.

“I really only had one pretty nasty bobble, and it was when I touched the mud going into turn one and I pushed a little bit, but other than that, I felt plumb comfortable,” he said. “I figured there’d be someone pulling along beside me because I’ve never been good here, but it was my night.”

The end of the race was anything but smooth.

After he finished, there was a crash that he avoided by swerving to his right and going up and off the track.

“I’m glad I brought fresh underwear, especially after the checkered on that last lap, because I nearly ended up out on the horse track,” Stout said.

He said the track conditions for the feature were good.

“The track ran really well, and I’m kind of surprised it came around as fast as it did. It was a little narrow at the start, but it came around and widened out pretty good,” Stout said.
