After opening the season with seven straight wins, Warner fell to Class A Miller 25-22, 18-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-8 in high school volleyball action Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Miller.
The Monarchs are now 7-1 and ranked second in this week’s South Dakota media Class B high school volleyball poll.
Miller got 11 kills from Paige Werdel and 10 more from Emma Pugh.
For Warner, Jaycee Jung led the way with 16 kills.
On Thursday, Sept. 4 the Monarchs picked up 25-5, 25-1, 25-10 thrashing of Leola/Frederick. Warner cracked 17 aces. Jung led the attack with 10 kills.
Chester holds down the top spot in the poll, while Northwestern is ranked third.

Northwestern swept Herreid/Selby 25-6, 25-22, 25-15 Tuesday, Sept. 9 and Langford Area 25-14, 25-7, 25-11 on Thursday, Sept. 4. Ashley Haven had a combined 31 kills in the two matches.
The Wildcats are now 7-1.
Aberdeen Central improved to 3-1 with a four-set triumph against Huron Saturday, Sept. 6 at Golden Eagles Arena. The set scores were 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16.
Lauryn Burckhard led the way for Eagles, going 45 of 55 on attack attempts with a match-high 21 kills. Alivia Miller had four aces and 22 assists for Central.
Aberdeen Roncalli picked up a 25-12, 25-12, 25-17 sweep at Florence-Henry Tuesday, Sept. 9. That came after a 25-7, 25-8, 25-8 sweep at Tiospa Zina on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Agency Village.
Against the Wambdi, the Cavaliers had 16 aces as Rylee Voeller and Grace Cogley finished with six apiece. Gabby Thomas had six kills.
After opening the season with a loss to Northwestern, the Cavaliers have won four straight.
Aberdeen Christian picked up a 25-17, 25-23, 25-11 sweep at Langford Area Tuesday, Sept. 9. Ari Johnson had nine kills, while Sophia Eichler added six aces for the 2-2 Knights.
On Friday, Sept. 5 Christian dropped a 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17 decision to Herreid/Selby Area in Herreid. Jordyn Rossow led the Wolverines with a match-high 14 kills, while Jolie Fogarty had a dozen kills for the Knights.

Golden Eagle boys soccer squad shuts out sixth straight opponent
Make it six straight shutout victories for the Aberdeen Central boys soccer team.
The Golden Eagles defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 4-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Sioux Falls.
Goalie Zander Kuhfeld turned away every shot as Tyler Bain, Gus Bjerkne, Arnau Hernandez and Martin Contreras all scored goals
The Golden Eagles are now 7-1 and sit fourth in the Class AA boys power point standings.
Two first-half goals proved more than enough as Central logged a 2-0 triumph against Brandon Valley on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Brownell Activities Complex.
Linus Johnson provided the offense, scoring both goals for the Golden Eagles. Defensively, Kuhfeld came up with four saves on the four shots Central allowed.
The Central girls scored three second-half goals to finish with a 3-3 draw at Sioux Falls Roosevelt Tuesday. Addyson Salfrank scored all three of the Eagles goals.
Central recorded a 1-0 shutout over Brandon Valley Saturday at home. Espyn Kuhfeld had the lone tally for the Golden Eagles, scoring in the 36th minute. Central goalkeeper Ava Beck turned back all eight shots she faced.
The Golden Eagles are now 4-3-1 and seventh in the Girls Class AA standings.
Groton boys fall to James Valley Christian
Groton fell to James Valley Christian 3-2 Tuesday, Sept. 9 in high school boys soccer action. Karsten Fliehs and Ethan Kroll scored the Tiger goals.
Both the Groton girls and boys teams came away with victories Saturday, Sept. 6 against West Central at the Groton Soccer Complex.
The girls won 1-0 thanks to a Carly Gilbert goal in the 25th minute. Jerica Locke had the assist. Goalie Jaedyn Penning made five saves.
Groton’s boys got a 2-1 victory over the Trojans. Kroll and Axel Abeln scored the Tiger goals. Goalkeeper Gage Sippel had a monster game, keeping a clean sheet even though he faced 15 shots.

Roncalli’s Daggett finishes fifth at Vermillion Invitational
Aberdeen Roncalli compiled a 331 team score to finish third Monday, Sept. 8 at the Vermillion Invitational high school golf tournament.
The host Tanagers earned the win with a 290, followed by Dakota Valley’s 306. Ryan Morlan of Vermillion was the medalist with a five-under par 67.
Roncalli was led by Lucas Daggett, who finished with a 76 to help him to a fifth-place finish.
The Cavaliers return to the course Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Groton Invitational.

- Aberdeen Central’s Carson Urlacher set a school record, finishing the Augustana Twilight boys high school cross-country meet in 15:23.62 on Friday, Sept. 5 in Sioux Falls. That was good for 11th place in a field of more than 500. Allie Novstrup led the Eagles in the girls race, placing 29th of more than 400 runners in 18:42.71. Both races were 5 kilometers.
- Former Northern State University golfer Jason Young, who now lives in Rapid City, has been announced as a 2025 inductee into the South Dakota Golf Hall of Fame. Playing for the Wolves in the early 1990s, he was a three-time all-conference honoree. He grew up in Pierre and became a member of the Professional Golf Association in 1998.
- Northern State’s volleyball team went 4-0 to open its season at the Chadron State Eagle Classic last weekend. The Wolves defeated the University of Mary 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 5. Abby Brooks had 15 kills. Later in the day, Northern swept the host Eagles 3-0. On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Wolves claimed a five-set victory against Augustana. Linnea Neisham led the way with 17 kills. Natalia Szybinska added 15. NSU rounded out the weekend with a 3-1 win over Black Hills State. Neisham tallied 14 kills with Brooks adding 11. Warner graduate Ava Nilsson recorded 187 assists in the four wins. The Wolves are ranked 22nd in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II volleyball poll.
- Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide claimed victory at the Redfield Invitational cross-country meet Thursday, Sept. 4. She crossed the finish line in 18:36.89, more than a minute ahead of teammate Tara Blachford. Groton’s Reyelle Gilbert was fourth, while Aberdeen Roncalli’s Addyson Cassiday placed fifth. Clark/Willow Lake won the team title. In the boys race, Groton’s Jayden Schwan placed third while Deuel won the team championship.
- The Aberdeen Central girls tennis squad split its matches against Mitchell and Brandon Valley on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Mitchell. Central lost to the host Kernels 7-2. Estelle Riggs picked up Central’s lone singles victory. Avery Tennant earned an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win over Megan Mastel at No. 1 singles as the Golden Eagles downed the Lynx 6-3.
- Aberdeen Roncalli split a pair of girls tennis duals Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Pierre. The Cavaliers beat Rapid City Central 9-0 and lost to the host Governors 8-1. Abby Andersen had two singles wins for the Cavaliers. On Thursday, Sept. 4 in Huron, the Cavaliers defeated the Tigers 6-3 and lost 7-2 to Madison. Gianna Cihak picked up two wins at No. 3 singles. She and Molleigh Hofer teamed up for a No. 2 doubles win against Huron.
- Emaleigh Olesiak paced the Northern State women’s cross-country team on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls. She finished the 5-kilometer race in 18:06.79, good for 20th place. In the men’s race, Jacob Angerhofer’s 4-mile time of 20:39.07 left him 111th out of 394 runners.
- Former Aberdeen Wings goalie Jake Sibell has signed a professional contract to play for the Greensboro Gargoyles of the East Coast Hockey League. Sibell played college hockey at the University of St. Thomas in the Twin Cities. He suited up for the Wings during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
- The Aberdeen Wings opponents for the 2025 North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minn., have been announced. They will open the season against the Wisconsin Windigo at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24. They’ll play the U.S. National Team Development Program squad at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 and the Fairbanks Ice Dogs at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Aberdeen beat the Ice Dogs 2-1 to claim the 2019 NAHL Robertson Cup. The Wings picked up two exhibition victories against the Watertown Shamrocks last weekend, winning 4-3 in overtime Friday, Sept. 5 in Watertown and 4-1 in Aberdeen the next night at home.
- Alex Gilbert has been hired by the Aberdeen Wings as an assistant coach. He was previously an assistant coach with the New Mexico Ice Wolves in the NA3HL.
- The Northern soccer team was blanked 3-0 by Northwest Missouri State to open its season Friday, Sept. 5 in Maryville, Mo.
