An Aberdeen student whose dream is to gain admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has organized a weekend project to hone his leadership skills.

Esten Foss devised a plan to raise funds for local veterans by having a car wash. It will be from noon to 5 p.m. in the CorTrust Bank parking lot at 2016 Sixth Ave. S.E.

The plan came together in collaboration with Jesse Milbrandt of Brown County Veterans Service Office and Angie Cleberg, impact coordinator for the United Way of Northeastern South Dakota, according to a news release.

Foss is a junior-to-be at Central High School and some of his friends are helping out this weekend, according to the release. He approached the United Way seeking guidance on a project to help veterans.

Money raised will go toward the purchase of the costly batteries required for motorized wheelchairs used by veterans. Any additional funds will be directed towards other United Way veteran resources.

“We are incredibly proud of Esten for his decision and initiative,” Cleberg said in the release. “His commitment to supporting our veterans and his leadership in this project are what makes this next generation of leaders so inspiring.”

Donations will be accepted at the car wash, and Centennial Homes will match the total collected.
