Two Aberdeen area sites selected as possible home for new men’s state prison


More than half of the proposed sites for a new South Dakota men’s prison to be reviewed this week by Gov. Larry Rhoden’s Project Prison Reset Task Force are located in the Sioux Falls area.

Two others are in or near Aberdeen.

The 22-member panel will review 13 proposals for potential locations at its second meeting Tuesday, April 29 in Springfield. Sites under consideration also include locations in Grant County, Huron and Mitchell.

The sites were submitted in response to a formal request for information opened by the task force earlier this month. The proposals aim to address the South Dakota Department of Corrections’ long-term incarceration and rehabilitation needs, offering alternatives to a previously stalled $825 million plan for a multi-security level prison about 20 miles south of the existing state penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

The Project Prison Reset Task Force, established by Rhoden in February, is tasked with developing a new strategy for the state’s prison infrastructure. Among the alternative locations is the former Citibank campus on 60th Street North in northeast Sioux Falls, which has already been surveyed by members of the task force.

While the request for information indicates a preference for sites within 20 miles of Sioux Falls, it also allows for proposals from other areas of the state. A preferred site would encompass at least 100 acres, though smaller parcels may be considered if they can be combined to meet facility needs. The 10 proposals to be reviewed this week include sites ranging from 69 to 160 acres.

The Department of Corrections’ originally preferred site, where more than $50 million had already been spent, covers 320 acres and was intended to house a 1,500-bed, multi-security level men’s prison before construction was paused.

The task force announced two more potential sites late on Monday, April 28.

A new Canton proposal features 218 acres on the west side of the town bordering the south side of Highway 18. Since the site was a late addition, limited details have been released, but the property includes a stream on the south side, which cuts the land into three pieces.

A new Sioux Falls proposal is in Wayne Township and consists of 97 acres a half-mile north of Highway 42 (12th Street of Sioux Falls) west of the city and south of I-90.
